What is a Peşkir? The Peşkir (Pesch-kir) is the small version of the Peştemal (Pesch-te-mahl), the Turkish name for hamam cloths. Peşkir and Peştemal were already used at the Sultan's court in the 16th century. The Peştemals were traditionally used in the hamam, the bathroom of the time, as a loincloth and bath towel. The hamam cloth in its small variant, the Peşkir (Pesch-kir), was used as a towel, as a napkin at banquets and as a turban in the hamam. A Peştemal measures about one metre by two metres, whereas the Peşkir or Peskir comes in different sizes, such as 50 x 100, 60 x 100 or 30 x 40 centimetres. Thus, the Peşkir is also suitable for different purposes today.
